About Yda

I love screen printing!  I have been doing it for over thirty years and I still get a thrill when printing a new design

I am a South African printmaker and designer and started my business as a way to print my own designs onto textiles.

I had been working as a freelance textile designer after completing a City and Guilds Diploma Course in Textile Printing and Dyeing at the London College of Furniture, in London, UK. I would sell my designs through a textile design agent at international shows and some of the clients who bought them were Libertys of London, Calvin Klein and DKNY. I so enjoyed this work, but after a while, I wanted to be more involved with the whole process of designing and printing fabric - not just the first step, which was creating a textile design.

Upon returning to South Africa, I set up my studio at home in Johannesburg and began screenprinting my designs onto fabric. I also taught screenprinting both in my home studio and at the Imbali Visual Literacy Project in Kagiso, Johannesburg. The studio business grew substantially once I designed products such as tea towels, purses, aprons and shoppers for the South African tourism market. Those products are our ‘bread and butter’, but we also print smaller ranges of more bespoke textiles.

I have been screenprinting for over 30 years and still enjoy it as much as I did when I took my first print. It is so versatile, allowing me to keep exploring and creating with forms and colour. I am never bored!

In recent years, I have enjoyed printing on paper using an etching press and hope to do many more of these in the future.
